It only takes a quick installation of three AA batteries (which requires a Phillips screwdriver) to get Chou Chou ready to play. The doll comes with its own special bottle, teething ring, and pacifier, each which activate one of Chou Chou's features. We found her very straightforward to operate: when you put the doll's pacifier in her mouth and she'll start "crying," with her cheeks turning red. Remove it, and her bottom front teeth will "grow" in. They stay there until you reset the doll. Chou Chou keeps crying, so you can "soothe" her by giving her the teething ring. The crying will stop, she'll start making sucking sounds, and the redness in her cheeks will disappear. The baby also starts crying if you press her back; soothe her with her bottle, and she'll stop crying.
We were glad to find that it's not all fussing with Chou Chou: press her give her tummy a tickle, and she'll give a satisfying giggle in response.
Cuddly, Realistic Features
Chou Chou has a soft body, inside which is the battery box, on/off switch, and play buttons. The buttons can be manipulated through the doll's body and clothing to activate crying and laughing. The doll also has a firm rubber head, hands, and feet. Her cute, one-piece pajama outfit and cap are removable. The long-lashed eyelids, which close when the doll is lying down, provide a classic touch to this otherwise somewhat "high tech" toy. The interactive features are very easy to activate with the doll's accessories, and the laughing, crying, and sucking sounds that Chou Chou make are satisfyingly realistic. We had slight difficulty resetting the doll's teeth for continued play: a small button inside her back must be pushed to hide the teeth, and it is somewhat difficult to find without opening up the pajamas and the doll's back. However, the larger buttons -- one on the back to make her "cry," one on her tummy to make her "laugh" -- are activated easily with a simple squeeze.
Chou Chou's size and weight are comfortable for an older toddler or young child to cuddle, but smaller toddlers may have difficulty carrying her around.
